*Crystal ceramics is a glass decoration technique that was created towards the end of the 18th century. It consists in including in a crystal object a ceramic cameo which has been molded beforehand and then finely chiseled by hand. It was Boudon de Saint Amans who democratized this technique by helping to improve the production time of these decorative works which previously remained very expensive to manufacture. The inserted medallion is in porcelain paste. The clay is molded into an impression, then the clay is allowed to dry, causing the figure to shrink naturally in the mould.
After retouching, a light firing is carried out to harden the figurine. The silvery appearance of the figures, reminiscent of metal sulphides, is due to the thin layer of air trapped between the crystal and the ceramic when the surface of the figures is brought into contact with the burning crystal during the production of the glass piece.
The worker must have a great mastery of his art because the technique of inclusion presents great difficulties. The glassmaker can proceed in two ways to insert a porcelain cameo into the crystal: either by blowing or by molding. In both cases, the cameo is inserted between two layers of glass: by these processes, one can therefore introduce the figurines inside a crystal, whatever its shape. The crystal works of Baccarat, Saint-Louis, Clichy, Saint-Mandé, and others…produce this glassware which was highly prized in the 19th century by the aristocracy of the Empire but also by the new bourgeoisie which flourished during the Restoration. Crystal-ceramic objects are of all kinds, decorative objects (candy boxes, candlesticks, etc.), glassware, plaques, bottles, paperweights, etc. They are decorated with figurines that are different and unique each time. The porcelain cameos mainly represent the great characters (Napoleon 1st, Louis-Philippe, the Duke of Orléans, the Count of Chambord, the Emperor Napoleon III and the Empress Eugénie, the English sovereigns Victoria and Albert, etc.) as well as religious subjects and motifs drawn from the antique.
