Object description :

"Rare Arithmometer L.payen 8 Writers"
Rare Arithmometer L.payen 8 Writers ARITHMOMETER. Blond oak, brass and steel. L. Payen, Paris, 44 rue de Châteaudun, around 1907. Fairly good state of conservation. Cabinetwork in blond oak to be re-upgraded a little. Dimensions: 59cm × 10cm × 18cm. Calculating machine with 8 writers, 16-digit totalizer and 9-digit tachometer, from the workshops of Louis Payen, successor to Thomas de Colmar. Stamp of the manufacturer engraved with his address, 44 rue de Châteaudun, Paris, and with the serial number 2731. Nice copy in perfect working order. The arithmometer was the world's first commercialized calculating machine, and for nearly forty years was the only type of calculating machine available for sale. This calculator made it possible to add and subtract two numbers in a direct way and it facilitated multiplication and division operations thanks to a mobile result plate. It is to the Frenchman Thomas de Colmar that we owe the invention of this machine, in 1820. It was marketed successfully from 1851 to 1915 and, from 1854, the Academy of Sciences recognized its scientific interest. Between 1887, when Payen took over the business, and 1915, the arithmometer evolved rapidly with ultimately more reliable mechanics. In Marguin (Jean), History of Instruments and Calculating Machines. Hermann, 1994 We tested this calculating machine, it works perfectly, for more information do not hesitate to contact us on 06 08 92 54 55 We are constantly buying this type of old equipment do not hesitate to send us Pictures.....
