The rest of travelers
Oil on canvas

Thomas Gainsborough, English painter of the 18th century, is especially famous for his many portraits of nobles. He is also considered the leader of landscape painting in England and influences many artists. Gainsborough draws inspiration from Dutch painters of the 17th century, in particular through the use of a palette composed of shades of greens and browns. These autumn colors, which reflect a certain melancholy, announce the romanticism that will prevail during the first half of the 19th century. The landscapes of Gainsborough and his circle evoke a nature threatened by the rise of the Industrial Revolution. In our landscape, the fluidity and vivacity of the touch give a feeling of movement. Indeed, the clouds and the leaves of the branches seem to move to the rhythm of the wind, announcing the arrival of a threatening storm. The treatment of the travelers in the foreground enhances the tonal palette through the use of the three primary colors of the rest of the composition.
