In the Poitevin marshes, we have the flat, and in Brière the barges! And in both cases, they are flat boats. So much for the title given to this work...
As for the artist, after having started at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, he attended the Académie Julian as a pupil of Luc-Olivier Merson . He produces a work essentially inspired by Brittany. He exhibited from 1905 to 1940 at the Salon des Artistes français and the Salon d'Automne, as well as in several events in Brest or Nantes. His landscapes of the Brière will notably be exhibited at the Moyon-Avenard gallery in Nantes. Alongside his painting, he led a career as a decorator and poster designer which notably enabled him to win first prize in the Breton Artists poster competition (1907). In 1933, he won the silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français for his work "Les Veuves". In 1937, with René-Yves Creston, he decorated the Pavilion of Brittany at the Universal Exhibition.
