Virgin with Child
oil on canvas cm. 74x62
In frame for a total of cm. 96x85.5
Coming from an important Bolognese private collection and never to have appeared on the market, the beautiful canvas offered here is characterized by its high quality and very good state of conservation, as well as by the magnificent frame in gilded and carved wood which contributes to embellish it further.
The Virgin, her left hand resting on her cheek, wears a red and white dress with yellow and blue sleeves, the same blue as the mantle which then fills the scene in the lower part of the composition. He holds the Child Jesus in his right hand, leaning on his chest, represented in the process of blessing while in his left hand he holds a small wooden cross. The background finds light from an open window to the sky in the upper right corner, while the rest of the scene is taken up by a red curtain.
The vivid colors of the painting, with the dominant contrast between the two primary colors blue and red, the position of the Virgin and Child and the overall high quality of the work make one tend to attribute the work to an artist active in Rome in the first middle of the 18th century, an artist who had in mind the lessons of the masters of his time and who preceded him, first of all Ciro Ferri whose works, especially in the frame chromatic, can easily raise ours.
