"Ceremonial Cooler - Italy - Late 16th Century"
This majestic ceremonial cooler was made in Italy at the end of the 16th century. Composed of a large copper basin, it is embellished with various copper ornaments. First of all, pear-shaped motifs punctuate its entire border and are interrupted by two pretty drooping handles, whose curved shape still seems steeped in Gothic aesthetics. These handles are supported by twice two seated lions, delicately worked, with a luxuriant mane. The four feet on which this basin rests are formed by the same lions. The magnificence as well as the size of this object leave no doubt about its private and ostentatious character. In view of its function, this cooler was certainly ordered for a special event, such as a wedding or other celebration.
