Son of an Arts and Manufactures engineer, Roger Vergnot obtained the baccalaureate in 1912. Mobilized as a chief sergeant in the infantry in September 1914, he was demobilized on November 14, 1919. He entered the National School of Fine Arts in 1923. After receiving the certificate of aptitude for teaching drawing (higher degree) in 1923, he was seconded as drawing teacher to the high school of Düsseldorf (Germany) in 1924 then appointed to the high school of Bourges (Cher) in 1925. At the same time, he directed the school of applied arts of Saint- Amand-Montrond (Cher) from 1928. Then, he was appointed to the Versailles high school (Seine-et-Oise) in 1929 and the following year, to the Montaigne high school in Paris. He taught there throughout the Second World War until his retirement in 1960 and was a pedagogical adviser for the new classes from 1947. Painter, he obtained a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes français in 1923 and exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1929. His work was renowned. His landscapes, inspired by cubism, and his nudes were highly rated. Roger Vergnot took part in the Resistance and in the fighting during the Liberation of Paris. After the war, he was active in the National Syndicate of Secondary Education and was elected full member of the Secondary Education Council for teachers of artistic education in the elections of 1946, 1950 and 1954; he sat on its permanent committee and on the Higher Council for National Education. He was also elected full member of the 7th national joint commission (artistic and practical education) from 1952 to 1955. Roger Vergnot married in June 1922 in Paris (XVIth arr.) with the daughter, without profession of an engineer of Arts and Manufactures. The couple had two children then divorced in 1934. He remarried in September 1936 in Paris (VIth arrondissement) with a teacher teaching in the Aisne, daughter of a pharmacist. They had two children and separated in 1958.
