Object description :

"Bronze Of Satyr Playing With The Infant Dionysus, Italy Between XVIIIth And XIXth Century"
"Satyr playing with the child Dionysus" - Lost wax bronze casting dating from the first decades of the 19th century with original patina. The sculpture represents a satyr, in whose hands are placed cymbals, his gaze turned towards a child, identified as Dionysus, god of wine, drunkenness and the liberation of the senses. The infant Dionysus, seated on the shoulders of the satyr, has his head surrounded by a crown of vines and holds a bunch of grapes in his right hand. On the accessory is a pan flute and a climbing vine.
The sculpture, very elegant and expressive, reproduces the original Greek bronze of the middle of the 2nd century B.C. A 2nd century A.D. marble Roman replica is to be found in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
The base, from the 18th century, is in white marble with marble reserves called "nero scritto" on a marble base called "portoro"
