"French Or American School Circa 1830 : "lady With A Rose""
French or American school 1830: “Lady with a rose”, oil on canvas to be restored 93 X 65 cm. Significant wear and masticated cracks almost giving it the appearance of a deposited fresco. We learn from our mistakes. I learned a lot… When I acquired this painting about thirty years ago, it was roughly pasted on panel and covered with very covering repaints which struggled to show the interest of the painting, but I had had some years before an "American Primitive" that I had identified thanks to an article in an art magazine (it was our only source of knowledge at that time when the Internet did not exist), and that made me wonder interest in Folk Art close to Naïve Art from the French 19th century, so I asked the restorer to save it "in time" so that it would cost less. Naive that I was! Once unstuck from the support, relined, repainted, removed and puttied, he had no more time and has only just found it by starting to empty his studio! Despite her condition, I am touched by this Lady with broad bare shoulders, blue enameled gold jewelry and holding a rose in one hand and a handkerchief in the other… The last photo shows a stage where only the top has had the coatings sanded. A little white spirit was passed over the time to take the photos. Do not hesitate to ask us by email or telephone for additional information or photos. We have many objects and paintings to restore in our shop/capernaum/depot in Pau where I let myself be a little overwhelmed and for which we prefer to sell on site, preferably in batches. Come and help us tidy up by buying! Other photos and many other objects in our shops in Pau and Biarritz and on our website: galerielhoste.com.
