A pupil of the Beaux-Arts in Paris, he was a pupil of Jules Lefebvre and Fernand Humbert. He exhibited in 1906 at the Salon des Artistes Français and received a gold medal in 1920. In 1913, he was second in the Prix de Rome. He created the first poster for the Cannes Film Festival. In 1950, he became elected member of the Institut de France. From 1955 to 1962, he was curator of the Jacquemart-André Museum.
