A painter known for his fundamentally commercial tendencies, he is nevertheless considered one of the greatest painters of Rome at the end of the 19th century. He participated in the main Italian and international exhibitions, often winning first prizes and sometimes achieving undeniable success (Munich Exhibition, 1869; Vienna Exhibition, 1873; Paris Exhibitions; Rome International Exhibition, 1883 and 1911; Universal Exhibition in Paris , 1878 and 1900, to name only the main ones). The themes he tackles most frequently are those of Roman folklore, attractively painted and finding favor with the rising bourgeoisie; however, he also deals with paintings of historical subjects, such as The Flight of Pope Eugene IV at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.
