Roméo AGLIETTI (1878-1956)
Painter of Italo-Corsican origin belonging to the School of Algiers Trained by Gustavo Simoni and Rochegrosse. He grew up in Algiers and Corsica then during his young years, he toured Italy. He finally settled in Algiers with his family. He took part in a few official missions in Egypt and then he mixed with intellectual and artistic circles in Algiers, which allowed him to teach painting and drawing in addition to his career as a painter. His connections and his work enabled him to found the Union Artistiques d'Afrique du Nord in 1925, which then organized its annual Salon with award ceremonies. The 1930s were very dynamic for the artistic world of Algiers with the fairs, the galleries and the opening of the Museum of Fine Arts and it was a prosperous period for the artist. The Artistic Union of North Africa ceased its activity during the Second World War and when it resumed the momentum of modern art led an era in the group. Aglietti remains there because of his particular attachment but his activity and his exposure decrease. He eventually retired to his studio during the 1950s and died in 1956.
