Pair Of Large Pots Pourris After Gouthiere XIXth flag

Object description :

"Pair Of Large Pots Pourris After Gouthiere XIXth"
Description:
Chased bronze, green Campan marble.
This important pair of "pot pourris" is based on the original model by P Gouthière, reproducing  the famous "brûle parfum" of Duc d'Aumont now in Wallace collection (red jasp). It was purchased by Marie Antoinette in 1782.
Pierre Gouthière one of the greatest makers under Louis XVI and in the absolute created wonders, known fame and ended up in destitution.
Our potpourri is in Athenian. The plinth has three pairs of twisted twin little feet, a round marble slab bearing the three large feet, and a small pile of berries in its center. The three supports are hollowed out with friezes, girded in the lower part with a curved and openwork belt. These feet widen into scrolls and masks of fauns and are bound with large garlands of flowers.
A snake between the feet is spiraling upside down, mouth open as if to eat the berries, like the original Duc d'Aumont model described above, later "pots pourris" will be made with the snake head up.
Under the marble basin a frieze of flowers and leaves is in rosette centered on a hanging bay. The marble basin is in the shape of a gadrooned crater.
The collar is adorned with an openwork gallery which gives them their name of potpourri. These beautiful objects are served by a deep and firm carving and the beautiful green Campan marble ( but difficult to render in a photo, where it appears greyed out).
Note the inventory figures stamped under the bottom.
These "pot pourris" were redone in the 19th century with certain differences (feet, details of the garlands...). Ours are very close to the models acquired by the Queen.
