This painting represents a baroque palace animated by characters. Jan Baptist van der Straeten (1671 - 1741) was a Flemish painter who specialized in architectural paintings depicting gallant scenes in imaginary Renaissance and Baroque palaces and buildings. Very little is known about the life of Jan Baptist van der Straeten. It is known that the artist was active in Antwerp between the years 1685 and 1731. Between 1685 and 1686 he was an apprentice of the painter of architecture and perspective Jacob Balthasar Peeters and was recorded as such in the archives of the Guild of Antwerp of Saint Luke.
