Biography:
Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879) was a French sculptor, considered as one of the main representatives of animal sculpture in the 19th century, whose subjects were particularly popular under the Second Empire, like Antoine-Louis Barye , Auguste Caïn and Pierre Louis Rouillard.
Mêne specialized in small size bronzes, and did not produce work for public statuary. His animal subjects have been very popular and have been the subject of numerous editions. Exclusive publisher of his works, the perfection of his productions was recognized and he revealed himself, with Barye, as the one whose success has been the most constant, and this over the longest period. Mêne appeared to be one of the best lost wax casting practitioners of his time.
