"Pewter Dish By Jules Brateau"
Magnificent cast and chiseled pewter basin with relief decoration representing in the center a Fame surrounded by a band of children supporting a ribbon bearing the names of sculptors, painters, musicians, architects. The wing of the dish is divided into four parts indicating the Arts: sculpture, architecture, painting and music. Each beautifully represented as an allegorical figure; their attributes are alternately added. Clear punch of the artist on the seat of the allegory of Sculpture. Against hallmark "with gibets" on the reverse. Print: second contemporary edition of the artist. This model was created from 1887 to 1889 and was the subject of at least two editions during the author's lifetime, before 1923. A copy like this and equipped with its ewer presented at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889 earned him a gold medal. This object remains one of the major works of this talented artist who engraved his molds himself, drawing inspiration from the works of François Briot and Caspar Enderlein. A bit of history (thank you Internet): Jules Brateau was a student of Auguste Nadaud (1835-1889) at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris. After a difficult start, he worked with jewelers Boucheron, Henri Vever, Bapst and Falize. From 1878, he devoted himself to pewter silversmithing, of which he was one of the initiators of the revival in the last quarter of the 19th century. His works of great finesse were first inspired by the Renaissance and the 18th century, then he turned to Art Nouveau during the 1890s. He received a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1878 and a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 for his Les Arts ewer and tray in cast and chiseled pewter, made between 1887 and 1889. He was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1894. He was a member of the jury at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. Jules Brateau also produced busts, medallions, medals and bas-reliefs. He died on October 23, 1923 in Fécamp, where he is buried. Some of his goldsmith's models have been reissued by Christofle and Maison Chaumette Note: exceptional quality of finish.
