A wooden sculpture on a pedestal depicts a one-headed Bodhisattva - Jūichimen Kannon. This is a variety of bodhisattva highly revered in Japan. The other heads, summarily marked, symbolize the ten stages of existence to attain Buddhahood, and at the top is the head of Amida Buddha. In his hand he holds a lotus flower - a symbol of purity, and the desire to save all living beings. The wood is polychrome, gilded with scales. Japan, Edo period, 18th/19th century.
