"Large Portrait Of An English Actress After Thomas Gainsborough"
Our painting is a replica from the first half of the 19th century of the portrait that the famous portrait painter and landscape painter Thomas Gainsborough (1727 - 1788) made of Sara Siddons, a very fashionable English actress at the end of the 18th century. Seated in a large armchair, she is shown half-legged and in profile in front of a dark red draped curtain, no doubt an allusion to her profession as an actress. She wears an elegant dress with blue stripes, a yellow silk shawl and a large hat trimmed with ostrich feather. A theatrical, proud-looking, almost aristocratic portrait! Our replica is of great finesse of execution and in excellent condition after professional cleaning and the restoration of a small tear in the bottom at the top left. Its original frame with pearls and ribbons in gilded wood is also in very good condition. The size of this exceptional portrait is important: 102 cm x 127 cm, framed 112 cm x 135 cm.
