About the artist:
Otto Hamel was born as the son of a decorative painter in Erfurt. After school he attended the Royal Erfurt School of Art, where he studied with the historical painter Eduard von Hagen and with Hans Semper. Later, he continued at the educational institution of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin and at the Académie Julian in Paris with B. Constant, R. Fleury and Lefebvre. On a scholarship from the city of Erfurt, he continued his studies in Berlin with Max Koch and Franz Skarbina. He made study trips to England, the Netherlands, France and Italy, where he received a state scholarship for his study stay. In 1888, a year later, he opened his first studio in Berlin. He continued his studies in Paris, where he came into contact with Impressionism. In 1890, after his return, he was appointed professor of decorative art at the School of Fine Arts in Hanover. He headed the decorative painting department there for 32 years. Otto Hamel prefers the depiction of bustling public squares, Italian streets and church interiors.
