We are used to meeting mute servants from the Napoleon III period or from the 20th century, but I have rarely encountered any from the 18th century. this one is early in time in the XVIII th century and takes up archetypes used in the painting of the XVII th century, with characters such as Salomé carrying the head of Saint John the Baptist in a tray or giving it to a servant in a tray or even the opposite.
it is not common to find in statuary a large figure of profane appearance forming a mute servant.
the sculpting quality is very beautiful, the face is radiant and of very good quality, the proposals are very well respected, look at the arms, legs and feet. the garment is superb and the drape is really interesting, we find a general movement of the drape towards the back of the character as for his hair as if he was taking the wind from the front.
beautiful details appear like an angel's head on the torso, points of attachment to the garment etc...
the quality of the polychromy is also very interesting, the face, arms, hands, legs and feet are in gilded wood.
The garment is green, red and silver with moire effects. This mute servant rests on a square base painted in faux marble, carved with gadroons in gilded wood around the edge.
the tray has been made removable. some cracks due to age. a finger has been reattached.
some small lacks and insignificant polychromy resumptions.
very good general condition.
a mute servant of very good quality that can form a very useful decorative element.
attention large dimensions: height 114 cm and 38 cm by 40 cm for the base.
