Object description :

"A Louis XVI Greek-neoclassical Console 18th Century Circa 1781."
Elegant wall console in carved, molded and waxed natural wood, with antique black marble entablature. Antique Black or Lucullus Marble is remarkable for the intensity of its black color. . Polylobed trapezoidal shape; this console is located halfway between the so-called Greek and neoclassical styles, from the Louis XVI period around 1780-1785. The belt is divided into three curved faces sculpted with alternating hearts and pearls, each connected to each other by cubic connections sculpted with rosettes in line with the median cartouche which embellishes the median part. From either side of it in the lower part escape rings of garlands of finely carved flowers spanning the masses of the base. This consists of two feet with flat bands molded with deep grooves raised with acanthus leaves on cubic connection dice; each of them rests on sharp eagle claws. A convex spacer sculpted with grooves unites the two parts of the base in the lower part, this one is topped in its center with a covered vase in the Greek style decorated with garlands in line with those of the belt. Dimensions Height 84cm width 87.5cm, depth 49.5cm. Antique Black or Lucullus Marble is a marble as rare as it is remarkable for the intensity of its black color. Unfortunately, it had dried up since the 18th century. It was discovered and then brought back to Rome by the Roman general Lucius Licinius Lucullus, around 50 BC. AD, during the third Mithridatic war where he defeated the armies of Pontus and Armenia.
