"Black And Gold Lacquered Chair With Sino Oriental Burgauté Decor XIX Eme"
Magnificent and rare Second Empire fireside chair This black and gilt lacquered wooden chair is one of the most beautiful models made at this time. Most of the decor is in the richness of the file. In its central part underlined by a gold fillet, a scene in Asian style burgautée and very finely painted flourishes. This one represents a decor of pagodas topped with weeping willow type foliage. The more oriental style top, with a burgundy connection, has a central cartouche painted with a small bouquet of roses surrounded by gold foliage. The beautiful padded seat is upholstered in a raspberry pink fabric against a background of firebirds, peonies and foliage. Very delicate set in good general condition, to be used with care. Note some usual restoration, especially on the top of the left foot. Burgauté lacquer panels imported from China and Japan were widely used in Europe over the centuries and in particular in the 18th century to adorn precious furniture of large and small format. The technique of burgauté lacquer makes it possible to create landscapes and to represent characters with mother-of-pearl inlays of different colors. The iridescent and colored mother-of-pearl cut into small pieces is placed on a still wet lacquer to form a landscape or a simple decorative pattern, then the whole thing will be covered with a transparent lacquer which, once dry, is sanded to show all the encrustations. .
