Kilim Soumak Shahsavan Iran 150 X 112 Cm

Mafresh (sack) opened and reconstituted Iranian shahsavan wool, cotton warp, 1950. Very good condition.

Beautiful shahsavan consisting, in the central part made in soumak, of four geometric motifs including zoomorphs. In the borders the motif 'S' and 'star of Medes' are widely represented. Striped kilims harmonize with the central part.

The territory of the shahsavans lies south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Made up of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik and Caucasian ethnicities, the Shahsavan confederation was formed during the reign of Safavid ruler Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629). Shahsavan means "those who love the Shah".
