Michel Bellec (1931-1996) - Breton School. Navy (Brittany) - 53x43 cms. Gouache signed lower right and framed under glass. Michel BELLEC was born on June 9, 1931. It was at the kindergarten in rue Brochant in Paris that he produced his first works. A pupil of the Estienne Technical College (book arts and crafts), he studied drawing and chromolithography in the studio of Georges Capon. Offset retoucher, graphic designer, publicist then artistic director in various advertising agencies in Paris, he ended up creating his own studio “Quadrature”. In 1965, he left to devote himself solely to painting. Over the years, his research becomes more and more bare, freeing itself from the usual references. There are no more, for the eye, the traps of beauty. In his canvases, his gouaches, his drawings, his watercolours, he expresses his wounds, his quest for love, his hopes, his joy... "The Talented Scribbler", "the Refined Boor", "the Pagan Mystic" as he defined himself as having "given everything to the sun, everything except its shadow". The violence of his canvases – an exercise in balance between reasoned analysis and the bewitching appeal of a dizzying void – contrasts with the delicacy and fragility of his watercolours. Some being necessary as an antidote to others. Presented in various biennials and official fairs, his works are present all over the world. It was in his gallery-workshop in Barbizon that he held his last exhibitions. On July 19, 1996, he climbed to a summit from which he no longer descended remaining for eternity among us because as he liked to say: "an artist does not die, he remains clinging to a nail".
