"Maurice Soudan : "the Great Bouquet""
Maurice Soudan (1878-1948): “Le grand bouquet”, oil on canvas 100 X 65 cm, mounted in a gilt frame with canvas groove 112 X 77 cm. Belgian artist who went into exile in Toulouse during the First World War where he left pivotal works between the Fauves and the Symbolists imprinted with poetry. A retrospective was organized at the Musée des Augustins in 1960. This was produced around 1930, when he lived in Perpignan (address on the frame) alternately with Collioure. In an atypical composition in its verticality, this bouquet stands out against a background treated in "sfumato" in the manner of Leonardo da Vinci in a rich palette declined sometimes in "wiped" revealing the canvas, sometimes in impasto for the small characters of the background just suggested.
