Object description :

"Rare Pair Of Ewer, Orientale, Persia, XIX Century"
Important pair of "Aftafa" Ewers, in formerly tinned brass, decorated on all sides, with interlacing, friezes, stylized flowers and many other tribal motifs. Each engraved on both sides of the medallions (photos):
# of a scene, of a horseman armed with a spear hunting the wolf
# of a scene, of a believer attacking a man armed with a dagger, surrounded by animals
# of two scenes, from Persian life
Our pair comes from North-West Persia, Eastern Iran, Azerbaijan.
A bronze handle cast in Esse for each, beautiful engravings and a patina due to time underline the two objects.
The Dominica-shaped stopper supports a smooth fretel Note the many facets shaped like scales constituting the collar.
The presence of many stags, birds, interlacing of roses and ivy, Persian scenes of life, hares, symbol of the believer, adorn these magnificent objects....
Very beautiful multi-faceted water outlets finish the collars.
This pair is of particular interest in its decoration.
These Aftafa ewers or jugs were mainly used for ablutions, washing the face and hands, during religious ceremonies.
"The feast of the initiates, standing ready to serve, the beauties from all sides hold the ewer in their hands; the faiths of love wash their hands with all their soul;
while the beauties pour the water, the ewer by hand" Reading and Translation, AS Melikian-Chirvani, 1973 p 119.
From the 19th century and in good condition.
Ewers are iconic and are some of the most beautiful objects of ancient oriental art, they are all different as they were all special orders, even a pair with some slight differences remains very rare.
