THE GOLDEN LIFE OF THE RAJPUT MAHARAJAHS :
If the ancient rulers of Rajputana sometimes bore different titles, they have in common the root "Raja" (or Rajah), that is to say kings, their wives being of the "Rani". The monarchs of Rajasthan are themselves "Maharajas" (or Maharajahs), that is to say great kings, and their wives are Maharani. Pillars of the Indian Empire under the Mughals, then under the British, they lost all their rights by a constitutional amendment in 1971.
The decline.
*Educated and enriched by the British Crown, the Maharajas gradually abandoned the management of affairs to devote themselves to a golden life based on sumptuous festivals, tiger hunting and polo games, but independence would put an end to the great era. Maharajahs.
*In return for entering democratic India, the Maharajas retain their powers, titles, royal caskets and palaces. But, in December 1971, Indira Gandhi decreed the abolition of the pensions and privileges of princes.
