DUMONT Pierre

Painter of landscapes, urban landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, flowers. Expressionist.
Pierre DUMONT is one of the most original painters, and the most unknown of the school of Rouen. Pierre DUMONT came to Paris at a very young age and lived there in poverty in the district of La Ruche, then returned to Rouen around 1905. He painted very colorful landscapes in a thick, greasy paste spread over the canvas as if he were sculpting his vision. To contain his "Fauve" temperament To contain his "Fauve" temperament, Pierre DUMONT entered Joseph Delattre's Rouen Academy, then founded with artist and writer friends the XXX group which became the Norman Society of Modern Painting in 1909. His first paintings were marked by the influences of Van Gogh and Cézanne. From about 1910 Pierre DUMONT began to paint the cathedral of Rouen, from 1914 to 1919 he painted mainly the streets of Montmartre, the cathedral of Notre Dame, the bridges of Paris and the banks of the Seine. From 1911 to 1916, Pierre Dumont lived at the Bateau-Lavoir where he met Picasso who had a studio there. Pierre Dumont had his first personal exhibition at the Malpel Gallery in 1914 where the vigor and intensity of his landscapes, especially of Paris, struck the critics and the public. In 1927 Pierre Dumont suffered his first mental crisis, but once he recovered, his exhibition at Durand-Ruel was a great success. From 1929 onwards, Pierre DUMONT's health declined and a hemiplegia deprived him of his right hand; from then on, he painted clumsy canvases with his left hand, which was detrimental to his work, which, in its best period, remains to be discovered.
