Object description :

"A Louis XIV Ironwork Comtat Venaissin Console Early 18th Century"
Console of the papal enclave in Avignon ironwork of rectangular shape and curved. There is no cabinet making but locksmithing, here everything is white-hot metal, the iron is beaten and forced hot in powerful wooden molds, the sheet metal is pushed back on sculpted dies then chiseled to be finally gilded with the leaf. The two materials are joined together by screws, riveting, keying and eyelets. The slightly curved belt, as thin as it is opulent, rests on a base with a double decreasing evolution of involuted rifle-hound-shaped brackets. The feet, as elegant as they are nervous, are joined by a bridge decorated with a radiant sun from which a mask springs, on horns of plenty.  The whole base is anchored in two marble bases similar to the top.  Everything is a harmonious assembly of fine volutes, graceful scrolls and other foliage as lively as harmonious without palmettes, acanthus leaves and other foliage in the natural, all and all assembled through eyelets crushed. Here everything is beaten flat and forced on the anvil once it comes out of the master locksmith's oven. The whole thing is topped with a sheet of marble in turquoise blue breccia where a stave runs around the periphery. This work so specific of the master locksmiths Venaissins gives this atypical console all its letters of nobility; one finds there the exuberance of the south combined with the theatrical taste of a quite Italian magnificence.
The turquoise blue or bardiglio, blue gray with white stripes is a marble extracted from the quarries of Seravezza, not far from Carrara.
The inventories of the abbot G Arnaud D' Agnel in his work; The furniture of furnishing Provençal and Comtadin, volume first, third part plates CXXVII and CXXVIII learn us that some mansions Aix, Marseilles or Avignonnais had such parts, the Davignon castle in Camargue with share example preserved its console since the 18 th century.
