This large 18th century sculpture represents the Saint and Martyr Catherine of Alexandria who lived at the beginning of the 4th century.
Endowed with great beauty and great intelligence, she surpassed the poets and philosophers of her time.
She is represented here with her left hand on the cogwheel, an attribute that recalls her ordeal for having refused to marry the Emperor Maximian (Maxentius).
In her right hand, she could hold either the rest of the sword which evokes her beheading or the stem of the palm, emblem of Christian martyrs.
She is dressed in a long dress with marked folds which reveals her very well worked feet and hands.
Very good condition and very good polychromy. Lack of the attribute on the right hand.
