"Pair Of Empire Candlesticks, Maastricht, 1816-1828, J.j. Nijts "
Magnificent pair of candlesticks from the Restoration period in solid silver. They are of a disarming sobriety and an absolute absence of decoration. Only the nobility of the precious metal and the elegance of their shapes are at the origin of their timeless beauty. This style of sobrissime objects experienced a first great success under the Consulate. In northern Europe, this sobriety was a gréât success and remained in vogue for decades. Our candlesticks are from the hand of the goldsmith Jean Jacques Nijst and bear apart from his hallmark of master goldsmith also that of the guarantee office of the city of Maestricht in Dutch Limburg. He practiced his trade from 1816 to 1828, which allows us to date thèse candlesticks quite precisely. They still have their original sconces in hallmarked solid silver. They measure 25.5 centimeters in height and weigh 1500 grams per pair including ballast
