The work which represents a goatherd and his dog guarding some goats is proposed in a pretty old gilded frame which measures 84 cm by 94 cm and 60 cm by 74 for the canvas alone.
In good condition, it is signed lower left.
Son of a sailor, he studied his art with Émile Loubon at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille, his hometown. He exhibited at the Salon several times from 1857 to 1879. There he presented fishing and marine scenes.
Under the influence of the artist Félix Ziem, whom he met during one of his many trips to Venice, he also painted seascapes.
