Portrait of Henry John Temple as 3rd Viscount Palmerston, later Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1784-1865), 19th century attributed to Thomas PHILLIPS (1770-1845) One of a pair Beautiful large 19th century portrait traditionally identified as Lord Palmerston, oil on canvas. Portrait of exceptional quality and condition of Lord Palmerston who enjoyed a long term relationship and unsuccessfully proposed on several occasions to the companion portrait of Lady Georgina Fane. Excellent quality and condition presented in a superb gilt frame. Provenance: A private Old Masters collection, Cheshire, UK The pair of portraits arrived at the gallery with a host of conflicting information such as that of Francis Cotes and that of Lady Mary and Sir Edward Dering. We have acquired information on previous ownership and provenance as well as an old tag identifying the daughter to daughter of the Earl of Westmorland. Based on appearance and date, we have identified him with the 10th Earl of Westmorlands' daughter, Georgina, and her unsuccessful suitor, Lord Palmerston, who eventually married Emily Lamb before becoming Prime Minister.
