Biography:
Jean Joachim Supéry (1905-1990) known as Jean Joachim, was a French sculptor. He learned direct carving in the studio of his father Joseph-Louis Supéry, himself a sculptor, then at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Practitioner of François Pompon, Jean Joachim sculpted his famous "Polar Bear" in Lens stone, commissioned by the State in 1927.
Jean Joachim received several public commissions, and in particular produced a monumental sculpture for the Notre-Dame institution in Malakoff. He participated in the Salon from 1930, as well as in other exhibitions, notably with the group of animal artists and received the Edouard-Marcel Sandoz prize in 1975.
His style is more naturalistic than that of his teacher Pompon. Joachim led a career as a teacher at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Appliqués and at the Ecole des Métiers d'Art, and as a sculptor, in his studio which he shared with his brother, rue Le Planquet in Malakoff. He designed medals and female busts and of course stylized animal subjects.
