"Victor Coste (1844-1923) Net Cleaners On The Beach"
A cozy atmosphere and soft, pastel colors dear to this great artist of the 19th century Provençal School, Victor Coste. The work in very good condition is offered in a recent patinated Marie-Louise gilded frame which measures 35 cm by 46 cm and 19 cm by 30 cm for the panel alone. It represents women mending fishing nets on a beach, certainly between Saintes Maries de la Mer and Agde where the artist had his habits. It is signed lower right. A pupil of Dominique Magaud and Johanny Rave at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, then of François Barry, he participated in the Paris Salon from 1883 to 1896. He also exhibited at the Colonial Exhibition of 1906, specializing in seascapes. His works are now kept at the Palais Longchamp, the Granet Museum in Aix en Provence, the Regards de Provence Foundation and the Cassis Museum.
