"Jeanne-elisabeth Chaudet (attributed To): Portrait Of A Child From The Empire Period - Alphonse Giroux"
French School of the early 19th century, portrait of a child, a very pretty blond boy with blue eyes, wearing a beige shirt with a wide lawn collar. He is leaning against a table and holds a bunch of grapes in each hand. The painting is presented in its original frame, on its original canvas signed on the back of the famous luxury house Alphonse Giroux in Paris. Empire Restoration period around 1810-1820. The excellent craftsmanship of this portrait recalls the work of Jeanne Elisabeth Chaudet. Our painting, although unsigned, is probably from the hand of this talented artist rather than from a follower, because everything is perfect: the grace of the whole, the delicacy of the grain of the skin, the softness and the sparkle of the gaze, the play of light and reflection of the grapes. One could at first glance think that it is a portrait of the King of Rome, but this hypothesis is directly ruled out by the fact that our child does not wear the imperial symbols and the Legion of Honor. However, the resemblance is not a coincidence, but a political will to paint and represent in the manner of Napoleon (number of men under the Empire represented with their hands in the waistcoat, the Emperor's favorite posture) to show his support under the imperial regime. This leads us to think that our portrait is more likely from the Empire period than from the Restoration period, that of a child of a dignitary of the Empire, painted by a renowned artist like Jeanne-Elisabeth Chaudet, having been supplied by the best supplier. of the time, the Alphonse Giroux house. * Jeanne-Élisabeth Chaudet born Gabiou in Paris on January 23, 1767 and died in the same city on April 18, 1832 is a French painter. She is the wife of the sculptor Antoine Denis Chaudet (1763-1810), who sculpted busts of Napoleon. After the death in 1810 of her first husband Antoine Denis Chaudet, Jeanne-Élisabeth Chaudet married the senior civil servant Pierre-Arsène Denis Husson in 1812. She is related to several women painters, being the sister-in-law of the painter Marie-Élisabeth Gabiou; and also a first cousin of Marie-Élisabeth Gabiou and her sisters, Marie-Denise Villers and Marie-Victoire Lemoine. * The Alphonse Giroux house is one of the most famous furniture and cabinetmaking shops in Paris, active from 1799 until the end of the Second Empire. From 1799 to 1848, he worked at 7 rue du Coq Saint Honoré in Paris, under the name of Coq Honoré. The specialty of this house was very high-end small furniture for the bourgeoisie and the nobility, from whom the royal family also purchased. Very nice amateur portrait, ideal to complete a collection of early 19th century neoclassical furniture. It is in excellent condition: table cleaned, on its original canvas without repainting, in its original frame gilded with gold leaf and restored by our gilder. dimensions of the canvas 38x46cm Dimensions of the frame: 54x62cm
