René JOUHAN (1836-1927), Oil painting on canvas representing "The limestone cliff from the river", signed. Epoque XIX Dim. 32.5 x 40 cm Restorations visible on the back "René Mathurin Jouhan was born in Angers on September 25, 1836 and died in Bolbec on March 14, 1927. He was a painter, and Director of the municipal school of drawing and modeling of the city of Dieppe from 1876 to 1919; he was an Officer of Public Instruction. […] He entered the house painter, where he made signs and decorative motifs. In Angers he had for masters Dauban and Ingres for drawing and painting, and David d'Angers for modelling.At the age of 18 he was a draftsman with a master glassmaker, then a drawing and painting teacher at the Chevreul high school in Angers.He decorated many ceilings and walls castles of Anjou and Touraine. He left the region to settle in Dieppe in 1876 where he was director of the municipal drawing school." Extract from the website quoted by Fabrice Masson. We can assume that Jouhan decorated the interiors of the church of Bouchamps-lès-Craon before 1876, the date of his departure for Dieppe. He also worked at the high altar of Chérancé in 1861.
