"Guatemala Mask"
Polychrome wooden processional mask representing a conquistador. The mask has significant successive layers of polychromy because the religious elements were repainted regularly. The missing eyes were made of glass and stuck with glue in the holes provided for this purpose. The two openings above the eyes allow the dancer to guide himself during the procession.
Guatemala, San Cristobal Totonicapan region - 19th century.
Sold with a custom base in patinated brass.
