"Christ And The Samaritan Woman, Large Oil Painting On Canvas From The Seventeenth Century"
Hello, I present to you this very beautiful and large painting dating from the end of the 17th century, representing Christ and the Samaritan woman, in the style of Albani. This table therefore illustrates chapter IV, verses 5 to 30 of the Gospel according to John. In this Gospel the symbol of water is very present: indeed, Jesus is seated near a well, and the Samaritan woman comes to fetch water from it with her pitcher. Jesus asks the young woman to drink, which could seem shocking at the time, since the Samaritans and the Jews had very bad relations. Jesus then speaks of the "living water", that she would have asked him if she had known who he was, or at least if she "knew the gift of God". The living water of which the Messiah speaks is in reality his Word. This metaphor of water very present in the Catholic religion which says that we drink from the Word of God and that thus we would never be "thirsty" again. The Word of God would then be nourishing. We can note that in this painting this symbol of water is present by the well, around which they are, and by the jug of the Samaritan woman. The gesture that Jesus makes in the direction of the Samaritan woman where he “gives” her his Word, is a symbol: it is as if it were he who gave her to drink, that is to say the word of God. Moreover, we can note that the disciples, although surprised by Jesus' attitude, do not question him about his conversation with the Samaritan woman (who has already had five husbands and lives in concubinage with a sixth). This is reflected in the table; they have a surge of amazement, like a stop gesture, but they do not act for all that, which could show the respect they have for him. Note Some imperfections on the canvas, relining, material breaks and splits, but remains a vestige in good general condition for its age!
