"Cuban Mahogany Dining Table From The Directoire Period, Circa 1795-1800"
Dining table with headbands from the Directoire period in varnished Cuban mahogany wood. Large and beautiful almost round top resting on a six-legged base with double faced baluster, each punctuated by a shoe mounted on gilt bronze wheels. Two rounded side portions fold down vertically. The table can accommodate several extensions, supported by the four main legs of the table and by two additional mobile legs. The progressively adjustable extension is ensured by slides with keys in oak wood (original) stretching according to the number of extensions. Our table is equipped with its two old mahogany extensions with mortise and tenon side strips, allowing a homogeneous visual becoming, concealing the extension of the slides while stiffening the whole of the table. Three service extensions (without headbands) in stained wood increase its capacity by six additional guests. Like all 18th century furniture, this table is entirely fitted with pegged tenons and mortises. In the photographs the table is presented without, with two and one extension leaves in solid mahogany. The quality of the wood used, its specific assembly as well as the movement of the base with double inverted baluster designed by George Jacob at the end of the reign of Louis XVI allow a fairly precise date of manufacture; the end of the 18th century or the very beginning of the 19th century, circa 1795-1800. Indeed, the two opening sides of the belt do not separate into two equal parts as on the Restoration or even later tables but made from the same piece. These are assembled at the top of each of the legs by tenon mortise, which makes it possible to separate the two parts to be able to open the table and place the extensions on the slides. Moreover the continental blockade established by the emperor between 1806 and 1808, to deprive Great Britain of commercial relations with the continent; deprived the French cabinetmakers of mahogany from Cuba in favor of that of the French West Indies, darker and much more veined. The tray (closed) is 145.5 cm long and 144 cm wide and its height is 70.5 cm (+or- six people). With the two mahogany extensions with headbands (52.5.5 x2), the top measures 145.5 cm wide and 249 cm long (+ or - ten to twelve people), (with the three raw wooden service extensions held down by 52 cm ( x2) plus one of 37cm is available in addition, i.e. 390cm.
