"Old Tekké Rug, 124 Cm X 187 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool On Wool, Turkmenistan, Early 20th Century"
Old tekké rug knotted by the Turkmens of Central Asia in wool on hand-knotted wool, early 20th century, good size, 124 cm wide by 187 cm long.
In superb condition, knotted in a soft wool of very good quality and decorated with the tribal pattern in blue ink, wine and curry, in the shape of a "gül" medallion (usually an octagon, a square or a slightly modified diamond) .
Pattern repeated with constancy on the field, i.e. ten rows of three medallions, and a wide border decorated with the pattern of stylized arrows, underlined by two braids decorated with stylized oak leaves also, which gives these rugs great elegance and an almost heraldry.
In doing so, the borders are generally the same color as the field, it is part of the nomadic way of life consisting in deviating from all ostentatious forms.
The pattern found between each gul is called "kurbaghé-gul", consisting of four pairs of rams' horns.
We find on some model along the edges of sawtooth diamonds called "ener-dychi".
The entrance of the rug, fringes and kilim finish has three "güls", three for the exit.
# The tribe had its "gul" probably as a rallying crest. .
The soft and shiny wool is very tightly knotted and very fine (until the 1950s),
The pile is flush and this rug has a beautiful patina due to its age and slight discolorations throughout which give it an inimitable style, called "abrash". Turkmen handicraft rugs are of very good quality.
In other regions, nomadic rugs are often loosely knotted and have long pile, unlike Afghan or Turkmen rugs which feature dense, tight knots with the Persian knot, streaks of velvet and goat's or sheep's hair. sheep's wool, supple and shiny.
But the use of goat and camel hair is more common for warp and weft.
These rugs have a masculine aura and have always been appreciated since the 19th century for decorating the offices of businessmen.
These majestic carpets are certainly the best in Central Asia and are the work of the Turkmen tribes.
The same spirit of knotting and pattern is found in neighboring carpets from Turkmenistan but also in Afghanistan.
These carpets remain with the Caucasus the hardest to differentiate, so many patterns are specific to the clans of all of Central Asia.
This carpet is in very good condition, while presenting a beautiful patina and slight wear due to its good age.
