Biography:
Charles Martin (1884 1934)
Born in Montpellier. He studied at the Beaux Arts in Montpellier, then at the Julian Academy before entering the studio of Fernand Cormon in Paris. Draftsman, watercolourist illustrator. He collaborated with Le Sourire and La Vie Parisienne. He illustrated the marriage of Don Quixote, Persian letters, Carmen, tales and news from the fountain, the complete works of Musset etc….
The style of Charles Martin, with a delicate line, excels in the techniques of etching and stencil enhanced with a typographic line. Influenced by cubism, his style becomes refined and is characterized by a precise, efficient and joyful line.
Listed in the Bénézit and the dictionary of illustrators Ides and Callendes.
