Object description :

"Marine - Oil On Panel - Eugène Galien-laloue (1854-1941)"
Marine by the famous painter Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941). It represents a sailboat moored at the quay. Son of the theater painter and decorator Charles Laloue, Eugène GALIEN-LALOUE was born in Paris in December 1854. Following in his father's footsteps, he initially followed the lessons of Léon Germain Pelouse (1838-1891), painter of the Barbizon School, whose codes will greatly influence Eugene in his work. His artistic training came to an abrupt end when he lost his father at the age of 16. The eldest of a family of nine boys, Eugène was then forced to earn a living and his mother placed him with a notary. In 1870, he knowingly lied about his age and joined in the conflict between France and Germany. On his return in 1874, he was recruited by the Société française des chemins de fer to establish the route of the rails from Paris to the provincial stations. Returning to his first love, he then takes advantage of his comings and goings to resume his brushes and his works are quickly noticed. Thus, from 1877, he exhibited regularly at the Salon of French Artists and participated in numerous exhibitions. Prodigal, he assiduously painted different districts and large buildings in Paris during the Belle Epoque. We thus find in his work many views of the Butte Montmartre, the Place Pigalle as well as the construction site of the Sacré-Coeur. In the company of other painters, such as Charles Jacque or Léon Dupuy (a little-known artist whose name he later used as a pseudonym), he stayed in Fontainebleau and expanded his work with various themes such as sunsets and sunrises, farmyard scenes or even farmyards in the region, particularly in Samois-sur-Seine. During the First World War, if he was not mobilized because of his voluntary commitment in 1870 and his age, he produced numerous drawings and watercolors of military scenes. He also painted landscapes of Normandy, Seine-et-Marne, Marseilles, Italy and Venice. His abundant work therefore includes a multitude of varied themes. From 1893, he worked at the Bateau-Lavoir, a city of artists located in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, but his solitary nature did not suit this place. In 1940, he fled the occupied capital and moved to Bordeaux where he nevertheless stopped painting following a broken arm. He died on April 18, 1941. Our painting is signed lower left L. Dupuy (pseudonym he frequently borrowed). Circa 1900. In an old giltwood frame. Panel dimensions: 21x16 cm
