Born near Venice, Francesco Bassano (1549-1592) is the eldest of the four sons of Jacopo Bassano (1510-1592) He was deeply influenced by the art of his father, who realized with his important workshop, abundant and dense compositions, most often biblical, but pretexts for realistic evocations of daily life. During the 1560s, while his father was in the process of developing his pastoral theme, Francesco provided choice examples. In the workshop, he quickly asserted himself as the most gifted pupil, and also as the most faithful interpreter of his father, so much so that after 1570, he signed several times with him. Our composition is directly inspired by a prototype by Jacopo Bassano (the father) 1510-1592. Currently exhibited in Lisbon (Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga). Oil on canvas (60 × 76 cm) Indeed after its creation by the master around 1580, it was sent to Venice to serve as a model in the studio of his son Francesco, from which most of the versions came known to the theme. Another version of this deposition is in the Louvre Museum (oil on canvas 154 cm x 225 cm) In this second half of the 16th century, flourishing Venice welcomed some famous painters, the best known being: Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese and Jacopo Bassano . The latter's fame earned him the name of his hometown: (Bassano del Grappa) Our painting represents the deposition of Christ, a very popular iconographic theme concerning Jesus after the crucifixion. Joseph of Arimathea supports Christ with the Virgin and Mary Magdalene. As the scene takes place on the evening of the Crucifixion, the painter illuminates it with the light of a torch to accentuate the dramatic effect and sublimate the colors.
Very good state of conservation.
