Stunning multi-lobed ceramic tile LAJVARDINA, Persia (Iran)
Very nice multicolored enamel iridescence on a dark and deep blue / lapis lazzuli background.
"Lajvardina type ceramic is a ceramic developed, on tiles and shaped pieces, at tthe Mongol domination period over Iran in 13th and 14th centuries under Ilkanids reign. It is mainly characterized by a glaze close to cobalt blue. The term "lajvardina" means, in Persian, lapis lazuli, a rock of blue color, between azure and ultramarine. Dating can be determined from the famous Abu'l Qasim al-Kashani treatise who, descended from a long line of potters, wrote a book in 1301 giving recipes (particularly for siliceous paste) and decoration and firing techniques. At that date, the Kachan potters seem to produce alreday lajvardina-type ceramics, the production probably began before 1301, as suggested by pieces discovered at Takht-e Suleiman, during the excavations carried out in the palace of Abaqa (r. 1265-1281 AD) "
