"Louis XVI Period Mirror"
Louis XVI period mirror. Late 18th century. In carved and gilded wood, it is surmounted by a pediment with openwork motifs of foliage scrolls, pompoms, pine cones and topped with a laurel wreath. The center is decorated with a medallion with revolutionary attributes resting on an entablature and surrounded by olive branches. The revolutionary attributes present are composed of two flags and a lictor's bundle (long and thin branches tied around an ax by straps. In ancient Rome, the bundle was worn by lictors, officers in the service of Magistrates and whose sentences they executed. The French Revolution reinterpreted this symbol: the beam now represents the union and strength of French citizens gathered to defend Liberty). The decoration is completed on the shoulder by sheaves of wheat. The molding of the frame is embellished with a row of pearls and rais-de-coeur. Original mirror with mercury stain. The parquet floor is also original. Note: some very small gaps and times to the gilding. Dimensions: W 80 x H 141 x D 4.5
