"The Rest During The Flight Into Egypt - Circle Of Pierre Antoine Patel"
Oil on canvas – Late 17th / early 18th century. Surroundings of Pierre Antoine PATEL the younger. Rest on the Flight into Egypt. Landscape with ancient ruins. Pierre PATEL (1605-1676) as well as his son Pierre Antoine PATEL (1648-1707) said the young were specialized in landscapes with ancient ruins. In their paintings they integrated biblical scenes into imaginary and idealized landscapes, very frequently using the same components such as temple ruins, large trees and broken tree trunks, swamps dotted with rushes and reeds, large blue skies... They used the technique of atmospheric perspective, which consists of painting the background of the scene lighter. Thus the sky and the earth gradually brighten as they approach the horizon line and they become a pale blue-gray making the distant landscape indistinct.
