Animal ceramic sculpture depicting a wounded white tiger on its front leg, curled up on itself.
Rambervillers Factory in Vosges (Est of France), circa 1920
Animal sculptures are one of the characteristic productions of this famous ceramic factory. She will specially collaborate with famous animal sculptors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and often with Charles VIRION.
This artist, like Charles VALTON and Thomas CARTIER, have already worked this specific thema of wounded tiger by one or more arrows. We will notice here the right anatomical feline representation, seeming to progress with one of its legs curved.
The subject is also exactly reproduced by an engraved plate published in "animals, plants and their uses to decorative art", 1900 (Fonds of the Nancy Municipal Library collection); reference work "Les grès flammés de Rambervillers, Art Nouveau dans les Vosges" by Francine BERTRAND, Musée d'art ancien et contemporain Epinal, 1997's edition
The rambervillers factory has made a specialty of sandstone with blue to green metal cover, often nuanced and more rarely with more figurative colors as here.
It should be noted that this same subject has also been treated in several sizes, with or without mound / base, as indicated in the preserved business catalog of this Vosges factory, p13, under reference n° 265. To my knowledge, this piece has never been signed or stamped by the manufacture
The tiger's eyes here are made of sulfide / glass, as were also the largest and most beautiful animal ceramic pieces.
Perfect condition, which is very rare, the most fragile place being the most tense hind leg and the tip of the tail. I think I have also seen to date more damaged and or restored parts of this model than intact !
