He was the son of the Basel sculptor Johann Jakob Keller (1665-1747), he did a 3-year apprenticeship with the Basel landscape painter Andreas Hotzmüller and continued his studies in Munich under the direction of Nicolaus Stuber, From 1723/1724, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, thanks to a scholarship he received on the recommendation of Hyacinthe Rigaud. In 1726, while making frequent trips to Switzerland, he settled in The Hague as a decorative painter and provided many works there in the region's stately homes, princely palaces (such as the Het Loo palace) and noble residences . Keller is interesting to study because of his style formed from a mixture of David Teniers and Watteau, from which he drew heavily for this painting. at the Amsterdam museum: five child musicians; Aeneas and Anchises at the Stuttgart Museum: storm at sea
