Capital With Monk's Head In Limestone, Bourges 13th Century flag

Object description :

"Capital With Monk's Head In Limestone, Bourges 13th Century"

Capital with monk's head in limestone, Bourges 13th century
Capital with monk's head in lacustrine limestone from Berry, Bourges, 13th century

Carved in a very hard lacustrine limestone rich with crystallized fossils, this element of architecture is a "culot", in other words a load carrying element, certainly a departure of ogival vault.

There are similar capitals decorated with faces in many Gothic buildings, cloisters like St Jean des Vignes in the Aisne, or churches like the axial chapel of la Charité sur Loire or the church of Notre-Dame de Cluny, but also in civil architecture.

Visible lacks.
